How Bright Are You?

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

MATTHEW 5:14–16

Have you ever considered why we’re saved? We are saved for a reason—to bring glory to God. No doubt He will receive glory in the end by demonstrating His power in saving us. But God wants to be glorified now, and we should want to glorify Him. The way we glorify God is by living like saved individuals, different from those who are not.

Jesus said we are the light of the world. Not we will be, or we can be, or we should be, but that we are. The purpose is so those around us can see the light that is in us and glorify God. This is done through good works. When we choose to be Christians in name only, we cover up our lights. To let our lights shine means people see us doing things that Christians do, such as attending church regularly, tithing, performing some function at church, and ministering and witnessing to others. Participating in religious activities in and of themselves does not make a person a Christian. But Christians should be involved in religious activities. If not, they are Christians in name only, which brings glory to no one.

Jesus gives you the light; don’t cover it up.
